Forgiveness is a gift we don’t earn or deserve (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 5:8). However, the New Testament provides a clear path—a series of steps—that guides us in receiving this amazing gift.
The journey to salvation starts with hearing the word of God (Rom. 10:17). This involves more than just listening—it’s about understanding and embracing God’s message. Through hearing the Gospel, we come to know about Christ’s sacrifice and the salvation it brings. This hearing lays the foundation for belief, the next crucial step.
Belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God is crucial for salvation (John 3:16, Heb. 11:6). This belief acknowledges Him as our personal Savior and inspires us to transform our lives. Faith goes beyond simple recognition; it is a deep trust in Christ that leads us to repentance.
Repentance goes beyond just feeling regret for our sins; it involves a determined commitment to turn away from them and follow Christ (Acts 17:30, Luke 13:3). It’s a change in heart and mind that aligns our lives with God’s will. This repentance strengthens our relationship with God and prepares us to openly confess our faith in Christ.
Declaring Jesus as Lord is a vital declaration of our faith (Matt. 10:32, Rom. 10:9-10). This step affirms our commitment and readies us for baptism. Confession is the outward expression of our belief, connecting our personal faith with the act of baptism.
Baptism is a full immersion in water, representing the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ (Rom. 6:3-4, Acts 2:38, 1 Pet. 3:21). Through baptism, our sins are washed away, and we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This act is a visible declaration of our faith and marks our entry into Christ’s body, the church. It signifies our rebirth into a new life, guiding us to live faithfully.
Living faithfully means striving to follow Christ daily (Rev. 2:10, Matt. 28:18-20). It’s an ongoing journey of growing in faith, love, and obedience to God’s word. It involves a continuous effort to align our lives with Christ, strengthened by His grace.
